February is a very festive month for us. We kick it off with my brother’s birthday right after Valentine’s day, followed by my wife a week later and my dad just barely making February on the very last day of the month.
In recent years we’ve been landing at J. B. Dawson’s to celebrate and they’ve been great! This year we decided to reprise our presence there and I kicked it off with a Moscow Mule.
They do a great job with it, not too strong and not too weak. The flavors were fresh and citrusy bringing it all together for a great way to start my meal.
As our appetizer we ordered the twisted shrimp. These are always good with a light breading and a spicy sauce. You have to eat them quick so the breading doesn’t get soggy. The shredded lettuce underneath brings a fresh crispness to it that balances out nicely with the slightly acidic sauce.
My dad ordered a very simple meal. It’s had shrimp and sun-dried tomatoes with a couple leaves of spinach and a sprinkling of pine nuts and parmesan cheese. I tried it a couple times and it was quite good though it was extremely light.
My wife ordered the half rack of ribs. That’s her favorite dish here with the sweet and spicy BBQ sauce. They’re tender without falling apart giving it a good bite.
I tried the Maui Ribeye which is marinated in soy sauce with a notable amount of pineapple flavor and, apparently, ginger. The first steak they brought out was a little over medium well which I almost just ate but then a few areas were just plain overdone.
They were very gracious about replacing it and brought me a perfect Medium Rare steak which was perfect. It was tender, juicy and bursting with flavor.
No Birthday Cake?
As tradition we always get the cookie sundae to share. They bring it out in a hot skillet with a scoop of ice cream on top with chocolate and caramel syrup.
Overall it was a great meal, and a very happy birthday for us! It was a great time and everyone was welcoming and incredibly friendly.
